The St. Philip's College Child Development Center (CDC) has announced they will extend child care services throughout the summer months. The center, located on the MLK campus, provides child care services for children ranging in ages from18-months-and-walking to 5 years old. The extended services target student parents taking summer courses.

“The summer expansion is vital for students like me who struggle to find child care during the summer semester,” said Respiratory Care student, Erika Valdez.

Like Erika, many students struggle to find reliable child care in the summer months. Most facilities max out or have limited hours and days to service families. “My child bounced around different places just to be watched, it was constant stress,” she explains.

Approximately 44 children are served during the Spring and Fall semesters. Recently the center received a total of $55,500 for parent tuition assistance through the Child Care Access Means Parents in School (CCAMPIS) Grant. Grant funding for child care supports student retention and persistence without adding debt. 24 student parents were awarded grant funds for the spring semester.

CDC professionals remain current in leading child development techniques, such as hand-on experience, authentic learning and peer interaction. The program is one with an array of activities including arts and crafts, block building, computer play, dramatic play, free time and group time.

“With their help, I’m able to focus on school knowing my daughter is safe and only a parking lot away -- plus my daughter absolutely loves the center,” says Erika.

Services are also available to non-SPC students and employees. Enrollment will open March 2, 2020; hours of operation will remain 7:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. for students and 7:30 a.m.- 5:30 p.m. for community members.
